Player Questionnaires
Gaining Player Feedback
Getting honest player feedback is an important part of the improvement process for coaches. I’ve created three questionnaires for your players that will gain their feedback at multiple points throughout the season. It’s also a great way to build trust by giving a voice to your players.
The surveys are designed for the beginning of the season, mid-season and the end of the season.
I would recommend your players fill out the surveys anonymously to ensure you get the most honest feedback possible.
The main goal of the surveys are to get a sense of:
- Your players’ expectations at the beginning of the season.
- How your players are enjoying the season and if you’re on track with their earlier expectations.
- How your players enjoyed the season and what could make for better experiences in the future.
It also gives them a chance to pretend to be the coach and offer tips on improving your process.
There is a natural response to disagree with the negative feedback or discount the feedback given by players who indicate they aren’t as serious about basketball as you would want. I would caution against holding on to that response.
Unless you are coaching an elite AAU team or a College team, it’s likely that over half your players play basketball for social reasons or because of pressure from others. They don’t play for love the game and they certainly don’t aspire to play at the next level – and that’s okay. In order for those players to give 100% every day they need basketball to be fun and to feel that their coaches understand them as a person. These surveys will help you achieve that understanding.
I’ve given you the Word document so you can easily add messaging from the coaches at the end of the questionnaire.
